"Time management day procedure"

About: St John of God Bendigo Hospital

(as the patient),

I had an implanted Loop Recorder inserted recently & was told to be there at 9.30 am. No problem but I was getting thirsty, hungry and a bit cranky by 3.30 pm when I was finally wheeled into have the procedure.  I have poor veins for blood collection so by that time of day when the medical team were trying to insert a cannula it was very difficult everywhere they tried. The last time I’d eaten was dinner at 7.30 pm the previous night so my fasting time was excessive I was told to fast from midnight but who gets up for food that late.

Nil orally began at 7.30 am on day of procedure. I tried to keep up water intake til then knowing they would need to put a needle in. I understand that theatre lists can go awry any day but if the cardiologist has an amount of pacemakers that are done first why was I there so early. The staff were great this isn’t about that, it’s about coordination of the lists. I had already driven for one & a half hours to get to the hospital.

Another point to make  the fact that I am allergic to Penicillin and when asked what antibiotic was compatible for me I had no idea. Perhaps this information of what antibiotic is compatible could be added to the Drs referral list when they forward the patient's details. It would be over ten years since I needed antibiotics and my memory for what I took has diminished over those years.
