"Information provided at child health appointment"

About: Leederville Child Health Clinic

(as a parent/guardian),

I went to a child health nurse to discuss some things about my 18 month old child.

Based on my experience I was appalled by the nurse. I attended a drop in session, and found there to be absolutely no privacy. The nurse took our entire appointment and conversation in the waiting room in front of other parents. I recall I was told that my child doesn’t eat much because I give them milkshakes all day (how they referred to breastfeeding)! Which I feel is a disgusting way to speak to me. I understand the world health breastfeeding organisation recommends to feed on demand for at least the first 24 months.

I felt this nurse then belittled me in front of other parents, seemingly making out like I was not feeding my child a healthy diet because it included a lot of fruit and yogurt. I recall told me the only reason children have tantrums are because they’re tired and hungry and obviously my baby is those things if they're having tantrums. Which I understand is also incorrect! I believe it is a perfectly normal and healthy part of the toddler learning to deal with the world.

I have never come out of an appointment feeling so awful. Especially when I went there to seek support. This appointment was so bad, I will probably never go to a child health nurse again.

Dear heronyd95

I am so sorry that your recent experience with your community health nurse has left you feeling so awful. Our aim always is to increase parental confidence in their skills and knowledge, and it is clear this has not happened on this occasion. Please accept my apologies that the nurse has not communicated in a way that left you feeling supported.

It is unfortunate that you were not aware that drop in appointments are held in a group style setting. They are provided as opportunities for parents to raise minor concerns only. It appears that it may have been more helpful for the nurse to suggest scheduling an appointment where you could discuss your child’s diet and sleep in private.

I would appreciate being able to provide feedback to the nurse involved. If you would like to provide more information to enable this, I encourage you to contact the Child and Family Engagement Service on 6456 0032 Monday to Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm or email CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards

Terri Barrett
