"Tonsillitis at ED"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

After coming down with a nasty case of tonsillitis, I first visited the ED a few days later as directed by my GP due to suspicions of quinsy. This was ruled out and I believe I received adequate care on that day, recieving IV fluids, pain killers and antibiotics and sent home with antibiotics that night.

The next day my condition deteriorated and I found myself unable to eat or drink, in immense pain and light headed, I came back to the ER with these concerns and despite expressing my inability to take in fluid or food, was given painkillers in tablet form (which had me in tears). I did receive some IV fluids but the doctor informed me that nothing had resulted from my swabs from the previous day, and I was sent home and instructed to cease taking my antibiotics.

This treatment felt very dismissive to me, and after 3 more days of struggling at home only being able to take in minimal food and drink I was admitted back to the ED where at last I received some ongoing treatment, to which I am grateful for the doctors and nurses who provided care to me, three days of IV fluids and antibiotics which resulted in me finally seeing an improvement in my condition.

Dear februaryjt63,

I am very sorry to hear about your difficult experience the second time in ED, and also that you had to attend several times.

I'm sorry that your pain was inadequately addressed.

Also, I hope that you are finally on the mend.

I would like to follow this up further, so I would be very grateful if you could contact our Patient Engagement Coordinator on 08 9722 1521 or email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au.

Thanks for taking the time to post about your experiences.

Regards,

Steve Hartwig

Hello februaryjt63,

I'm sorry to see what happened, it sounds really frustrating. While everything seems to have gone the right way on your first and third times in to us, the way you have described that second visit is totally different.

There is clearly more to the story, and I'd be happy to investigate this case. If you would like me to do this, our Regional Coordinator of Consumer Feedback, is on (08) 9753 6537 or email swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au and can get that ball rolling.

Yours sincerely

Dr Hugh Mitenko, MD, CCFP-EM (Canada) | Deputy Emergency Medical Director

WA Country Health Service South West, Bunbury Hospital
