"Poor treatment for testicle"

About: Warren Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I am writing to make a formal complaint regarding poor and negligent treatment my child received whilst in the Manjimup hospital.

Recently, my elder child complained about abdominal pain and they informed me it was unbearable and had excruciating pain and it was on and off.

I took them to Manjimup hospital emergency care unit in the morning and they took my child into ED around 30 minutes later for basic check ups ( blood pressure and temperature ) and gave paracetamol and nurofen then asked us to wait for the doctor. Around an hour later my spouse went to the doctor and told them that our child was admitted due to severe pain and the doctor replied that they have two more patients and after that only they can examine my child.

Doctor showed up around an hour after this and checked my child and gave Gaviscon and advised us to take blood and urine samples. We completed the requested procedures and waited another 2 hours to have advice from the doctor. The doctor informed us not to worry and will do another test for gastritis and they will check the reports later and advise us. We returned home after that and gave the same pain killer tablets to my child every 6 hrs.

The next morning my child went to school and came back in the afternoon and had lunch. Around an hour later they informed me they had some pain on their testicles and it's not normal, then I checked and noticed a swelling in the right testicle and rushed to Manjimup hospital emergency unit and the doctor on duty at that time identified the case and they contacted another hospital’s surgical team and advised us to take my child to that hospital for emergency operation.

We reached the other hospital around 5 hours after and went to the emergency care unit. and my child underwent an emergency operation to remove the right side testicle which I feel will impact their future. As per the other hospital's surgeon they would have saved the testicles if my child underwent the surgery within six hours of onset of pain.

So I strongly feel if the initial doctor considers this case as a pediatric emergency and takes necessary actions as soon as we arrive at the ED in manjimup, my child will not face this unfortunate situation. As per my experience which i faced during this incident, I feel this is medical negligence.

Now I'm concerned about my child's mental health and their future.
