"My sibling’s treatment"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Kalgoorlie Outpatient Clinic

(as a relative),

A year long battle after bowel damage in surgery my sibling has been back and forth to hospital, between KHC & a metropolitan hospital. I’m wanting to voice my concern about the apparent lack of patient care and poor communication between the hospitals.

My sibling was flown to Perth recently and then sent back to Kalgoorlie for follow up pic antibiotics, they were told to come at on a weekday morning and was still waiting in the afternoon as no one knew what was going on and which staff were trained to administer the drugs.

I felt the staff at KHC were great and apologised for the long wait and confusion and told my sibling they would be more organised for the next day at the same time, and the same thing happened and feeling unwell my sibling was still waiting until after midday and still at the hospital an hour after that.

More recently my sibling was told to come back in the morning and they were sent home an hour later because they could not locate any paperwork or drug chart, it was at this point they realised they had to change the cover on the pic line and my sibling was asked to come back at in the afternoon as there were no qualified staff to change the pic.

My sibling also had to wait for a qualified nurse to administer the antibiotics. On leaving a couple of hours later it was advised the paperwork had not been located. I feel this is lack of professional care and don’t want this to happen to anyone else. I believe the hospitals should be able to communicate when it come to people’s health and well-being.

Dear trapperhz59

This sounds like a terrible ordeal that has been experienced by your sibling and has no doubt affected your whole family. You are correct, communication between health services is so often a failing, and rightly so a point of frustration for patients and consumers. This situation you have described sounds particularly exasperating, with complexity between different health services as well as poor coordination here at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus. I would like to apologise for this poor experience. I am pleased to hear the local staff were also quick to apologise for the confusion and inconvenience too.

I hope your sibling has been able to access the ongoing care they have needed at both the Kalgoorlie and Perth facilities. If you need further support, please do not hesitate to reach out to me by email Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au or by phone on 9080 5817.

Kind regards

Alicia
