"Maternity, Birth"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

Had my baby and everything went amazingly well! I found all the midwives/nurses I saw were incredibly friendly and supportive.

The next day I was supposed to be going home and had a paediatrician come and tell me that my baby had to stay because they wanted to do another round of bloods in 24hr. (due to opposite blood groups)

I felt frustrated because I was told my baby wouldn’t be checked on however ring the bell if need be. (If they aren't being checked why do I need to be there?)

After speaking to my midwife regarding this she advised me baby is completely healthy and she could do the bloods at home for me.

I queried this with the pead who I felt insisted I had to wait 3hrs to feed my baby (who is fed on demand) and then had to pump 30mls of milk. I wasn’t even 24hrs PP- my milk wasn’t even in! They mentioned that if I couldn’t express this amount that I would have to substitute with formula which I felt is a letdown because I understand the hospital supports BFHI!

This all left me really frustrated and let down with the health system. If that’s the advice coming from a trained paed then I feel that’s a little concerning.

What makes me frustrated mostly is if I was a first time mother I believe I would have been fear mongered into believing my baby was sick.

If it wasn’t for my midwife through the MGP I feel I wouldn’t have known my baby was well.

Dear capellabt47,

I am very sorry to hear that your experience with the paediatric team’s advice about your baby’s blood group incompatibility and feeding. Ensuring good communication and involvement of the mother is a key priority in caring for a newborn. This does not appear to have occurred in your case.

I’m very glad to hear you had excellent support from the MGP team. I hope that you and baby are doing well.

Would you please contact the hospital, swfeedback@health.wa.gov.au or on 97536537, so that we can further investigate your concerns and talk with you further about your experience. We take your feedback very seriously.

Yours sincerely

Karen Horsley
