"Imaging department"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I brought my parent into ED where they were eventually sent for an X ray despite me stating that an X ray is a waste of time, a CT would be better for muscle pain. Despite my protest, they did an X ray which showed nothing (we knew it wasn't a broken bone) and sent them home with a seemingly pathetic dose of pain relief.

We went to the GP where they were given a referral for a CT and better pain relief. The following morning, I had to call an ambulance due to the pain. While in ED, a different doctor saw my parent and ordered a CT while saying me to that a X ray is a waste of time. While my parent was having the CT done, they wouldn't let them move across in their own time, they moved my parent themselves and when the pain increased to 10/10, they jumped and the staff that was helping them, yelled at them saying that if they didn't keep still that my parent would hurt them. I feel the staff in ED and medical imaging clearly need more training. No doubt that the hospital will just defend the staff despite their apparent lack of compassion or skills.

The CT showed something that a X ray wouldn't. I feel the staff in ED and medical imaging that day were incompetent. It seemed to me there was no point doing a care call as I believe they wouldn't listen anyway as the first doctor apparently consulted their superior. Not happy.

Dear Nothappy123

Firstly, I hope your parent is now improving in their pain with the care of their GP and/or other medical providers. I am very glad they have you to advocate and coordinate their care. I am sorry for the seeming lack of care and training of the teams in the Emergency and Medical Imaging Departments. If you would like to have your parent’s clinical case reviewed please do not hesitate to reach out and provide their details to us. They best way to do this is by contacting me via email Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au or by phone on 9080 5817.

I would like to take this opportunity to provide some more information on the Aishwarya’s CARE Call. When a patient or family member makes this phone call it is answered by a senior manager or executive member, not a lead or supervisor in the department where treatment is being received, this is done to ensure that there is an objective review undertaken, with the patient’s care at the centre. I would always encourage anyone concerned for the care they or their family are receiving to reach out through this service by calling 1800 976 123.

Kind regards

Alicia
