I had a DCR operation (re installation of tear duct) under general anaesthetic.
My nose started bleeding before I was discharged, but I felt the nurse wasn’t concerned/busy doing other duties/I think we all thought it would stop. This was 5pm.
By 9pm it was still bleeding profusely, and the post operative said information sheet gave a number to call in the event of bleeding, elevated temperature etc. So I rang the number. The operator put me through and I got an answer phone, a 10 seconds voice to text message. I left a very incomplete message as 10 seconds wasn’t nearly enough. I rang back and explained I needed to speak with someone. I recall they replied there were no nurses and to just leave a message. I again followed on from last message but barely got through any content.
I ended up contacting a friend who is a paramedic, and they advised me of risk to airway and I spent the night upright.
I am reporting this because I believe it seems like a huge error, printing an emergency number then leaving it to a 10 secs voice to text system. I found you can’t even leave your name and explain the problem, and no one ever replied.
I was in need of a reply!
I recall the consultant couldn’t believe it when I told them at check up. Also I went on to develop a temperature, but didn’t bother ringing in since I believed I had already established the system was useless.
I felt this is appalling patient care.
