"Post natal ward"

About: King Edward Memorial Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I delivered my baby through the family birth centre. I cannot fault the incredible service that’s run through this clinic. I feel more resources should be spent to facilitate more women to deliver through this service as apparently often places are limited.

Following the birth my baby required 12 hours of monitoring. By this time it was the evening so we were admitted to the ward to stay overnight. I had laboured since that morning and while I was probably still running on adrenaline by the afternoon I was ready for a sleep. Unfortunately, my baby would only sleep if they were in my arms or they would cry. So I spent the night watching the clock holding them trying not to fall asleep. I rang the nurse to ask if they could help to settle my baby in the basinet. The nurse swaddled them then walked out but unfortunately my baby didn’t like to be swaddled so they cried. If my partner were there they would have been able to hold my baby while I had a few hours of sleep. So that first night I had 20mins of sleep all up and just watched the clock until the morning. In my opinion, partners should be screened and able to stay to help mums and their baby. I believe this would reduce reasons to call the nurse and improve patient experience.

Dear Motqp87,

Thank you for providing your feedback on your experience on the post-natal ward at King Edward Memorial Hospital after your delivery at the Family Birth Centre.

I am sorry to hear that the first night with your baby was so challenging without your partner present. It is important to us that our patients receive care that meets their individual needs, and I’m saddened to hear that you felt unsupported overnight. If you would like to contact our Consumer Liaison Service (phone: 6458 1444 or email WNHS, Consumer Liaison Service WNHSCLS@health.wa.gov.au), they can put you in touch with the post-natal ward mangers who would be happy to review the care you received.

Thanks again for reaching out - feedback like yours helps us to understand how we can improve the patient experience. I hope you and your family are doing well and wish you all the best.

Kind regards,
Delaney
