"Not tested"

About: Derby Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

Recently, we got a call from the dr and my partner/de-facto was taken to the ED. They were admitted and everything was fine. Some blood needed to be taken but it coudnt be taken right away as my partner needed fluid, so it had to be done the next day.

Between that time, my partner was put in a 2 bedroom ward with another person in there. This person was discharged and they put another person in there and they tested positive for covid! My partner has leukemia, pneumonia and they are anemic. My partner got the flu on top of that and that sparked everything up!

I said my piece at the hospital but in my opinion, this person should have never been put in there without being tested!

Dear frostpg74,

Thank you for bringing your concerns about infection prevention practices at Derby Hospital to our attention.

I am truly sorry your partner experienced flu symptoms during their admission, and I sincerely hope they have now recovered. Please be assured that we take infection prevention and control seriously and I have shared your experience with our Senior Nursing team and Infection Control team.

The team will meet with staff in the emergency department and on the ward to review the admission process to ensure patients are allocated suitable beds.

I also note that your partner has underlying health conditions so this experience would have been very concerning for the both of you. I sincerely apologise.

I would like to reassure you that WA Health experts continuously review, adjust and guide hospitals throughout the state on screening and managing COVID-19 presentations based on the latest research. Derby Hospital will continue to clinically assess patients upon arrival at the Emergency Department and on the ward for COVID-19 symptoms.

If you wish for your concerns to be further discussed and investigated, please feel free to contact the West Kimberley Operations Manager on (08) 9193 3275.

Once again, thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

Kind regards,

Tammie
