"Pain Management"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Pain Clinic

(as a parent/guardian),

My child has been struggling with all sorts of pain over the last few years, in their hands, their back and now their feet.  They've been to emergency at Royal Perth and was prescribed 6 days worth of pain killers that my child says numbed the pain but they've run out and the pain is very bad again.

They asked for another appointment with their pain management people but was told they couldn't get in to their practitioner until May.  And my child was told it was unlikely anyone else at the facility would prescribe the pain management I understand they need.  That's a long time to be in extreme pain and surely too long for a country like Australia?

I understand that whatever is wrong with my child is difficult to diagnose which means treatment is almost impossible but surely pain can be managed?  In my opinion something is wrong with the system for there to be such a delay in getting a repeat prescription to manage extreme pain.  This situation makes me feel powerless and frustrated.  We've built a health management system around publicly provided services then seemingly made them impossible to access.

Dear casingsc48

I was deeply sorry to read of your child’s chronic pain experienced over the last few years and the struggle they have had with managing this. I would like to acknowledge that as a parent, observing your child experience persistent pain is a cause of significant distress and worry for you and your family.

The management of chronic pain can be a difficult and evolving process. Chronic pain can be managed within the community with the support of a General Practitioner (GP), with referrals made for specialist treatment and care. This is managed over time by trialling several methods which includes a multidisciplinary team approach including medical, nursing, physiotherapy, psychology and occupational therapy staff.

It is difficult to comment on your child’s particular case without knowing their details; however, I would encourage you or your child to contact their GP in the interim, to ensure they are adequately supported until their pain management team is able to provide a comprehensive review in May. If they are currently under the care of the Royal Perth Bentley Group Pain Management Service, they can contact the Patient Experience Department on (08) 9224 1637, 8am to 4pm or email RPBG.feedback@health.wa.gov.au, who can look into this matter further for them.

I truly hope your child receives the care they need and wish them all the best in their continuing healthcare journey.

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

Kind regards
