"A nurse at the hospital"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Acute Medical Unit, Wards 5A &5B, AMAC (Acute Medical Ambulatory Centre)

(as the patient),

The nurse came in to my room early in the morning to give me my medications, I had just woke up and was stretching and I recall they said, stop that just take you medications so I can leave. I asked for a feedback form and the nurse was walking down the corridor and I asked them for their name and they said if you’ve come here to abuse me, I was doing nothing of the such, I was simply asking them for their name, in fact I believe the patient they were with would be able to attest this comment.

They told me to go back to my room now, and as I was walking away I recall they said don’t you dare trip this patient over. I was about 5 meters away from them, I was no where near the nurse or the patient. I have heard this nurse on the ward talking to other patients and I believe they are so kind to them, why were they so awful to just me? Is it because I’m gay? Is it because I have a brain injury? I don't  understand why they were so mean and snappy toward only me? I just lost my partner a week ago, I’m so fragile right now. Why me? I feel the nurse picked on me for no reason, I did nothing wrong, I had only just woke up.

Dear monocerosjp64,

Firstly, please allow me to offer my sincere condolences for the recent loss of your partner. I can only imagine what a difficult time this is for you.

Along with the personal difficulties you are currently facing, I was deeply saddened and concerned to read of your experience recently in our hospital with a member of our nursing staff.

Please know that the response and behaviour which you have described does not align with the values of our organisation, nor the expectations we hold so highly for person centred care.

I have been reassured that the member of staff involved has been counselled on their behaviour and provided the opportunity to reflect on the impact of their actions.

Once again, I am deeply sorry for your experience on this occasion and wish you all the best with your recovery.

Warm Regards,

Neil Doverty
