"Gambling with my child's life"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

Hi,

I'm a parent to a young child whose life I feel was gambled by a doctor in the emergency department of kalgoorlie hospital WA, i presented my child to ED with a red rash all over their stomach & high temperature upon arriving we were triaged and given a antihistamine by them then sent out to wait.

While waiting my child's rash was getting worse, a doctor had called us in, the doctor did not do any test nor do any obs on my child but proceeded to touch the rash and goes viral infection and said nurofen pandol will do. I explained the rash had spread during the wait and was told go home. So as i went home trusting the doctors opinion mind you, i have other kids at home one who has a hole in their heart, was given no information if it would be contagious to my other kids.

Anyway we headed home i gave said medications to my child witch then they were vomiting and getting worse, their symptoms got worse to have a seizure because of temperature spiked. I proceeded to take my child back to kalgoorlie hospital because something was no right, upon returning to the hospital hours later it turned out my child had scarlet fever! & a temperature of 39.1, and was hospitalised straight away, now my child fights for their life because the doctor who first seen them seemingly gambled and neglected my child's health and did no test! I am disgusted and heartbroken and am seeking justice for my child.

Dear importeryq55

Thank you for reaching out to us about your experience at our Emergency Department (ED).

I am very sorry to hear that your child was not diagnosed when they first came into the ED and I sincerely apologise for the anxiety and concern this must have caused. You did the right thing in bringing your child back to the ED when their symptoms became worse.

I would like to learn more about what happened and undertake a complete a review of your child’s care. If you are happy to, I would appreciate it if you could reach out to Alicia Michalanney, who is the Director of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus on 9080 5817 or via email at: Alicia.Michalanney@health.wa.gov.au because we want to learn from this and make sure that it does not happen again

I also want to assure you that immediate steps are underway to re-educate our staff in being alert for the signs and symptoms of scarlet fever and other streptococcal infections.

I hope your child is recovering well and that we hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Peter Tredinnick

Hello,

this is the parent of this child and my story,

Thank you for your reply. But unfortunately I feel its not just about re education on that disease its also about a distressed parent coming in with a sick child and not getting any sort of testing done and being rushed out the door! Its also the matter of the fact not taking measure to even check before rushing me out the door with no test or any education on anything of what my child's illness was nor if it could have effected my other children, especially one who has a hole in their heart where they cant fight illness as well as others can!

In my opinion, where is the discipline for this doctor who first saw my child and where is justice for my child who I feel got mistreated? And where is the comfort of a really stressed parent? Or where is the education justice for my other children's well being??
