"My recent experience as a breast cancer patient"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / Breast Cancer Care & Support

(as the patient),

Following my BreastScreenWA diagnosis of an invasive breast carcinoma, I was directed to the Royal Perth Bentley Group Breast Assessment Clinic to begin my personal journey with breast cancer and surgery.

Whilst it took a couple of weeks to confirm appointments firstly for additional imaging then a meeting with the breast surgeon and medical team, I knew from that point I was in great hands, every step of the way.

Prior to my surgery date, my surgeon requested additional scans to check on the spread of the cancer.  In my case, I was fortunate to find out that the cancer had not spread to other major organs which gave me a sense of relief going into the procedure.  My surgeon was also able to confirm the procedure as we'd discussed, also helping me to feel more assured prior to surgery.

Four days prior to surgery, I attended the hospital for all pre-admission procedures without any undue wait time - and every staff member I met with was caring and gave me plenty of opportunity to ask any questions, making me feel like I was in control of my health and care.

The day of my surgery was a long wait as I was the last surgical patient of the day.  Being able to relax on a recliner chair whilst waiting made it an easier experience.

From the moment I was wheeled to the pre-surgery area and then in to the theatre, I was made to feel the most important person they'd dealt with all day.  The team were cheerful and did everything possible to keep me relaxed.

Five hours later, when I woke in recovery and it was way past their normal close time, I was not rushed before being sent to the ward for my 3 night stay.

It was on the ward that I experienced the most care and compassion by the nursing staff.  I feel these nurses are to be commended for the work they do, day and night and over the weekend. My every need was met and nothing seemed to be a problem for any of them.

Others who I met on the ward such as the cleaners, food service staff as well as all medical staff were professional, well mannered and seemed happy in their role and treated me as if I were the only patient on the ward (which was not the case).

So to everyone at Royal Perth Hospital, a great big thank you for taking such good care of me.  I'll look forward to returning for my next surgery.
