"Transgender identity recognition"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I recently had to attend Bunbury emergency with my child who had overdosed. Firstly I would like to thank ED staff for their care and consideration shown to us.

My child is trans and part of their depressive episode was not having their identity recognised. In triage, gender was asked and only 2 options are able to be chosen from. While I recognise system changes are hard to implement, I do think considering these changes would be meaningful. Australia Post has an option of “other” and title of “Mx”.

In the purple chairs, the lovely receptionist, was scared to ask what pronouns should be used. We were so grateful that she even asked.

My child has a preferred name to match their identity, however the ID is of their birth name. I understand the legal ramifications, however I recall another metropolitan hospital will use the preferred name. Is it possible to have it bracketed?

These may seem to be “silly”, “innocuous”, “over the top” or even “ridiculous” requests to some people, especially to people who harbour bigotry towards the trans community. But to my young person, who is struggling with their identity and having it recognised so that the outside matches the inside, they are simply asking for the same consideration as everyone else- respect.

For communication to be done respectfully, for physiological safety and for kindness.

Dear Toaparent,

Thank you for posting this feedback about what must have been a very difficult experience for you and your family. We appreciate you acknowledging the care and consideration provided by our ED team. WA Health’s main information systems have only very recently been updated to provide a range of options for recording gender and pronouns. The changes were made earlier this month to allow multiple responses to questions of gender and pronouns, including free text fields. This is being supported with education to staff about how to ask such questions respectfully and confidently to facilitate more affirming care for all patients. With regard to preferred name fields, WA Health is working on adding this option as well. We don’t have a date as yet but we are looking forward to implementing it when available. Thank you again for sharing your experience. All the very best to you and your young person.

Regards
