"I feel dismissed"

About: Adult City East - Assessment Treatment Team & Clinical Treatment Team & Intensive Clinical Outreach & Mobile Clinical Outreach

(as a service user),

I wrote a story on care opinion last year about being discharged because I have the NDIS. The story goes they took me on for another 3 months and then discharged me once again. Recently I had a hospital stay once again because I was getting visions of harm to self and I got re referred to city east mental health to get the help I needed I first requested to get referred to another catchment because the trauma they have caused me in the past.

Fast forward to today as the hospital referred me back to city east to get the help I need and myself requesting another referral outside my catchment due to the trauma they caused me. I got a response via text saying they will not be taking my referral as I got the NDIS and will not be referring me outside my catchment zone to which myself the aboriginal liaison and the hospital requested. I know I need the help from a community mental health team but felt dismissed because of my history with city east. And feel like I can’t get treatment I need because I have the ndis.

Dear deploymentwf44

I am very sorry that you feel dismissed by City East Mental Health. I am familiar with your previous concern you have mentioned and I extend my sincere apologies of your continued concerns around being discharged from our Mental Health programs. Referrals to City East’s Mental Health programs including Assessment and Treatment Team (ATT) and Community Treatment Team (CTT) can be declined in the instance that patients are well supported in the community which can include appropriate NDIS supports and crisis plans.

Referrals to City East ATT are used for patients to access ongoing appointments. The service is still available in times of crisis, regardless of whether a patient has an active referral, and I would encourage you to contact them if you have any concerns of this nature.

I would encourage you to liaise the Patient Experience Team on 9224 1637 or email RPBG.Feedback@health.wa.gov.au should you have any further concerns.

Kind Regards,

Ben Noteboom

Update posted by deploymentwf44 (a service user)

Thank you for your kindness in your response, MHERL told me to go back to city east for another referral and they said I am not acute enough. A week later I ended up in ED with mental health concerns, and they referred me to the hospital where I was then an inpatient. I don’t understand that the hospital has concerns about my well-being and city east will not help me in the community because I am not acute enough.

Dear deploymentwf44,

I’m truly sorry to hear that you are continuing to have challenges navigating our mental health services and this ended up with you having another inpatient admission. This is definitely not what we want for our patients and community. I have asked our mental health team to follow up further and understand they are working with you to try to connect you better with a suitable mental health service for your circumstances.

I wish you the very best for your recovery.

Kind regards

Ben Noteboom
