Recently I attended Sydney Eye Hospital Emergency department with a referral for a suspected detached retina.
The initial wait was very slow considering that I had presented a referral from an optometrist. After around an hour I was seen by the Triage nurse who basically entered the referral into the system.
Another 40 minutes waiting, and I was seen by another nurse who applied dilating drops into the eyes.
Another 30 minutes later I was seen by a wonderful registrar who diagnosed the tear and completed a laser repair of the eye there and then.
My hope on entering the emergency department in an eye hospital for a suspected detached retina was that I would have been seen quicker. I fully appreciate that there were many other patients waiting and fully grateful for the quick service once I was seen by the doctor.
I just wish that the staff would have communicated better with me. I felt expecting me to read signs in the waiting room when I could not see out of my eye is a little silly.
