"Cancerous polyp initial notification"

About: Karratha Health Campus / Surgical Services

(as the patient),

I completed a bowel screen test late last year and returned a positive result and was advised to have a colonoscopy that same month. This was booked and completed in Karratha a couple of months later. On the following month I was contacted (via phone) to ask if i was available to come in and see the surgeon, no other details were offered - i advised them i was in Perth and was told it could wait until i was back in Karratha and booked me in. When i arrived for my appointment i was informed the original surgeon was not available so i would be seen by someone else. The surgeon i saw told me 3 polyps were removed and one was cancerous. I was due to travel overseas the following day and asked if this was urgent or i could deal with it after the trip.

Unfortunately, there was a language barrier (the surgeon) and i was unable to get my question answered. I decided to cancel my trip and seek treatment. I went to a GP in Karratha to get referred to a colorectal surgeon, unfortunately because a colorectal surgeons name was not used the referral was not actioned (i found this out after a couple of days after ringing the Perth hospital). I decided to seek treatment in Perth myself and flew down to book into a GP to start the process again. I was unable to get a copy of the histology report from Karratha Hospital to take to Perth? After finally obtaining a copy, I noted that the lab had contacted the surgeon and discussed the results a couple of weeks before I was contacted!! (I believe this is noted in the histology report)

Dear puppiswg53

Thank you for sharing your story of the care and treatment you experienced following Day Surgery at Karratha Health Campus. I am very sorry to hear that your post procedural support was disjointed and caused a delay in the follow up care you required. I hope that you are now receiving all the care you require during this important time of your healthcare journey.

I would appreciate being able to speak with you so that I can learn more about what happened and initiate a thorough review with our clinical team. At the completion of the review, and if you are willing, I would like to involve you in discussions relating to any outcomes or recommendations resulting from the review. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience on 08 9144 7652 or via email at: Matthew.Wells@health.wa.gov.au

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your story. I do hope that I hear from you in the near future.

Kind regards

Matt Wells
