"Brilliant, compassionate care from the ED and Surgical Ward"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Bunbury Hospital / Surgical Ward

(as a relative),

My grandmother recently received treatment and, sadly, end of life care at Bunbury regional hospital following an awful case of pneumonia.

From our initial presentation to ED via Saint John Ambulance (also a wonderful team) my Nan was treated with the utmost respect, dignity and compassion. The level of professionalism was excellent with very efficient communication between the health care staff and our family.

Despite my Nan being almost 99 years old, frail and agitated the staff were attentive, listened to her concerns, and valued her input into her own health care.

Nan was cared for on the surgical ward following her assessment in ED where the decision was made by our family to provide comfort cares only to make her death as peaceful as possible. Despite very traumatic and difficult circumstances for our family the staff were respectful of our wishes and could not do enough for us as a family and for Nan to make her final hours a peaceful memory for us to look back on.

We would like to make special mention of ED nurse Tess for her wonderful care and calm, reassuring presence. There was also a lovely doctor who cared for us in ED but I didn't catch her name. Thank you.

To Elle, Georgia and Ashlee on the surgical ward, we would like to extend out heartfelt gratitude for all you did for us, The little things don't go unnoticed. You should be proud of the wonderful professionals that you are. Dr Nithy Medical Consultant was a very calming presence and communicated with us with empathy and kindness.

As a health professional and employee of the hospital myself it is humbling to know I have such caring, skilled and talented colleagues looking after our vulnerable patients, and family members. Again, thank you. You have made all the difference to our family and your kindness will always be remembered.

Dear cqaringhf36,

Our deepest sympathy on the loss of your Nan. Our thoughts go out to you and your family at this difficult time.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your Nan's care. We do strive to provide kind and compassionate care to all of our patients and I'm glad to see that in your Nan's case this was achieved

I will pass on your kind words to the staff in ED and the Surgical ward and ensure that the staff you have personally mentioned are notified as well

I wish you and your family the very best into the future and look forward to providing the same level of care the next time you or one of your family members require hospital care.

Once again thank you for your kind words

Karen Horsley

Service Co-director
