"Treatment by emergency staff"

About: Bunbury Hospital / Emergency Department Bunbury Hospital / Outpatients Clinic

(as the patient),

I discovered a lump in my breast and my gp requested a ultrasound. this was done recently. Gp received the report and sent me to the local emergency dept. (bunbury) requesting they surgically remove the abscess (caused by trauma).

I was in triage/edac for 4 hours to be sent home with antibiotics.

Back and forth to the outpatient clinic multiple times over the following 1.5 weeks with no improvement (secondary ultrasound confirmed this)

Finally was sent to have the lump drained under ultrasound only to be turned away by the clinic as it was too severe and needed to be done surgically, as stated from the beginning. This led to another emergency visit in massive amounts of pain at this point. Finally admitted for a surgery the following day. Was sent to wounds clinic for follow ups.

Wounds clinic signed off and requested gp to remove stitches at a later date.

Gp had to prescribe more antibiotics and wound reopened and had a large amount of puss inside.

Nursing staff at E.D were trying to assist to the best of their abilities but I believe higher ups were apparently always too busy to sign off or give guidance.

Dear Broken boob,

Thankyou for sharing your health care experience with the emergency and surgical services here at Bunbury Hospital. Both Heads of Departments have reviewed your story and we are sorry that your experience left you waiting for review, feeling dismissed and requiring to seek further ongoing care and visits. We hope you are now recovering.

It is important that we get feedback about our service, so we appreciate that you took the time and effort to let us know about your experience and that we share that with our surgical and emergency department clinicians and look to how we can improve. My name is Dr Jacinta Cover and I am Medical Co-Director for Surgical Services at Bunbury Hospital. If you would make contact so we can investigate further or to share more about your experience; please contact me directly. I can be reached by phone 97222726 or email Jacinta.Cover@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards,

Jacinta Cover

Dear Broken Boob,

I do hope your condition continues to improve. I am reaching out as I have not heard from you. Although I have shared your experience with the surgical department for feedback, I welcome to hear more about your progress and if there is anything else we could investigate or consider doing differently in the future. Please do contact me with the details above if I can help. Thankyou again for your feedback.
