"Outpatient Neurosurgery"

About: Perth Children's Hospital / Neurosurgery - Outpatient Clinic F & Outpatient Clinic G

(as a parent/guardian),

My toddler has been referred to neurosurgery for a cyst on their spinal cord which is stopping them from walking. Despite the referral being urgent it has sat there for 2 and a half weeks without being looked at. Every time i phone they claim to have lost the referral so the whole process starts again. My toddler cannot walk because of this and it is affecting their quality of life. I am feeling very let down by our health system and by the neurosurgery department at Perth Childrens Hospital. What is the point of an urgent referral if no one seemingly actions it?

Dear earthdk59

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion regarding your toddler’s referral to the Neurosurgical team.

I am sorry to hear about your toddler’s condition and the impact this is having on their quality of life. This must be a very stressful time for your family and given the information you have shared, I can understand the sense of urgency to confirm your child’s surgery.

I would like to assure you that referrals are prioritised according to clinical need and confirmed as soon as possible. I am concerned, however, that you were informed that the referral had been lost and I would like to look into this issue. May I please encourage you to reach out to the Child and family Liaison Service so that we can confirm your child’s details and look into arrangements for your child to be reviewed. The Child and family Liaison Service can be contacted on 6456 0032 or by email at CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au

I hope to hear from you soon.

Your sincerely
