I attended an appointment with the gynaecologist having been referred by my gp. I felt that as my appointment was at the end of the day that I was being rushed so they could go home, the gynaecologist commented that my ultrasound report was boring and they didn’t know why I had been referred to them
I was disappointed to only be given one main option which was to go on the pill and felt I was wasting their time. I enquired about other treatment alternatives or if investigations into the cause could be done and was given a brochure for the mirena, and told that an ablation is not ideal. I told the Doctor that I definitely did not wish to get the Mirena but would consider the pill however it also was not something I wanted. I felt the nurse in the room didn’t look impressed with what the doctor was saying, and left the room, returning with printed information about the ablation procedure.
The dr then got onto their computer and printed an article about ablations not being reliable. I left my appointment with a script for the pill, mirena and tranexemic acid to allow me to decide which of those options I would go with. I believe the doctor said they would follow up with a phone call at some point but I can’t recall exactly now. To be honest I wasn’t interested in following up with them as I left my appointment feeling extremely uncomfortable about whether the care and advice I received was appropriate. I then received a letter from the specialist, which was (in my opinion) not only unprofessionally written, it contained inaccurate information. The letter stated “I hope you are doing well following the Mirena insertion. Good news is that your Pap smear was normal as was your STD check at the time of Mirena insertion. I trust you are doing well and will leave ongoing follow up with your GP.”
I did not have the Mirena insertion and never indicated any intention of doing it. I did have a Pap smear at my appointment however given the inaccuracy of the information in the letter I cannot be certain that the results in the letter are not mistaken for someone else’s.
In summary, both my appointment and the letter received have left me feeling entirely uneasy, and like my health concern was not taken seriously. I cannot be certain that the level of care received is the standard it should be and now have no desire to return to a gynaecologist for treatment/consultation.
