"Dementia diagnosis"

About: War Memorial Hospital

(as a relative),

My wife and mother of our two children the past twelve months was diagnosed with the dementia at the age of 66 years. This was a terrible shock and terribly upsetting to the family.

We were able to enrol in the iReadi Program 14.The nine week couse went so quickly, with everyone so friendly and supportive. The presenters were amazing, providing invaluable information that will assist us in the journey going forward. The biggest take away from the course was; despite this terrible diagnosis of a love one, there is hope and support out there; and it’s not the end of the world. We just need to put the learning’s into action, so we can enjoy whatever the future holds. A big thank you to Wendy and Christine for organising the course. You were both amazing!

Dear cygnusfn73,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story. I am so pleased that despite the distress of your wife's dementia diagnosis, you have been able to engage with the iREADi program to build a plan to move forward. We are very proud of the iREADi program and the work of Christine, Wendy and the team, and I have shared your thoughtful words with them.

In 2019, we heard from a partner of a person who had been diagnosed with dementia at a local stakeholder forum, and they shared that there was no support or rehabilitation program available to them at this time. This is where the iREADi idea was born. Through co-designing the program with participants such as you and your wife, we have been able to build a program that meets this post-diagnostic support and rehabilitation gap, and means that people have the knowledge and strategies to live their best life, despite the diagnosis.

We look forward to walking alongside you and your wife through this journey, and we are here when you need us.
