"ED treatment"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

Disappointed by the care received at Geraldton Regional Hospital ED. My mature-aged relative suffered a fall and ultimately X-ray showed broken shoulder. They were discharged without an adequate support device (sling), and without any pain relief beyond Panadol and nurofen which they had at home before presenting to Triage. As a health professional myself I'm extremely disappointed that their pain was not adequately assessed and there was no thought into their discharge as a non resident of Geraldton who would be unable to access a GP for a script. My relative arrived at home in tears from unmanaged pain and feeling lost as they had no advice except to expect a call from an ortho in a week's time.

Dear monocerosre79,

Thank you for reaching out on Care Opinion.

Thank you for sharing with us the experience of your family member at Geraldton Hospital Emergency Department (ED). Our aim is to provide thorough assessment and treatment to everyone presenting to the ED. Your feedback indicates there was an opportunity for your relative to have been managed in a more comprehensive and compassionate way. I offer my sincere apologies for any shortcomings in the care they received.

I would be very grateful if either yourself or your relative would consider contacting me. With their consent we can have their presentation reviewed by a clinician not involved in the presentation and they can make any recommendation of any actions that should have been done differently and ensure we support our ED team to provide the high standard of care our community rightly expects. We can also ensure your relative has all the appropriate arrangements in place for any follow up care they might require. My name is Cameron Ross, I am the Operations Manager for Geraldton Hospital. I can be contacted on 9956 2369 or email at geraldtonopsmanager.wachs-midwest@health.wa.gov.au

Regards
