"Giving birth to my baby"

About: St John of God Midland Hospital / Ward 2A (Maternity)

(as the patient),

I gave birth to my baby at Midlands hospital. A c-section was performed on me which I was Okay with but next morning I felt an ooze of fluid coming from my surgical bandages on my left and Right-side dripping down on to the bed. At the time I did not know what to make of it, so I just rested myself from the surgery I had the day before. Later that afternoon I felt an itch underneath the bandages and noticed that the bandages were raised. I immediately called the midwife at midlands hospital to have a look at what was wrong with the bandaged area on my hips.

The midwife began to pull back the dressing and cut some of the dressing away from the infected area of my skin that had reacted to the glue on bandage. My skin had blisters of 150mm long and 20 to 30mm wide running alongside the edge of bandage that was pulled off. The midwife at the time told me I was allergic to the surgical Bandages. That night I wanted to leave but I was told to stay for observation. 2 days after I first experienced the issue I noticed the blistering had occurred again and I took it up with the Doctor and they reassured me that I only needed an ointment cream and that they would prescribe it to me before I leave hospital that day.

My Partner and I began to leave hospital in the afternoon and was told to pick up the medication I needed at home on the way out of hospital at the pharmacy downstairs.

When we got home my Partner, and I notice there was no ointment cream for the blistering.

The next day at 9am, I began to have major discomfort, so I rang the Midland hospital to discuss what to do? they advised me to either go to my general practitioner or go to my local hospital, but I had an appointment with midwife from my local hospital at 11am so I hung around until she came to my place.

The midwife came and saw the blistering on my body and became very unsettled with what had happened to me at Midlands Hospital it was apparently very nonprofessional the way I was cared for, so she advised me to go emergency at the local hospital and that she would meet us there at the same time.

I get to the Emergency Centre, and I am seen to immediately. The hospital Nurse has her and another Nurse attend to my blistering (the ladies had cut all the blisters off on both sides of me) and had taken off the bandage.

Hello virgoke83,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and we hope you are feeling more comfortable.

It was sad to learn of the discomfort you experienced during such a happy and important time. We are so sorry you did not get the support you needed at the time. It is clear you experienced significant skin reaction to the dressings applied following your surgery.

We would like to discuss your experience with you and see if there is anything we can do to help. It is also important that an alert is placed in your medical record so that these dressings are not used in any future admissions. We hope you have made a full recovery and please contact our Patient Experience Team on 9462 4901 or via MI.PatientExperienceTeam@sjog.org.au. We look forward to hearing from you.

All the best

Gail Miller
