"Outpatients Gastroenterology"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a parent/guardian),

My child was admitted a couple of months ago for a week and stayed on the short stay/endoscopy ward for that time. We were discharged to have some tests and told we would have a follow up appointment with the clinic.

They discharged my child with a month's worth of a medication to trial, with the caveat we had to get an ecg to check their heart as that is one of the side affects.  There has been no check in to see how they have progressed on this medication or what their side affects were. Yes we can check in with our GP, and have, but even they were surprised by the lack of follow up, particularly as this medication is not one our GP comes across regularly in their practice.

My child's referral for the clinic is flagged as priority 1. It has been 50 days since their discharge and we have heard nothing!  I have rung the clinic regularly to find out an update and each time I get told that they will let the clinic clerk know and they will contact me.  What an absolute joke. No one bothers to contact me back, and I've been told that the priority 1 list for that clinic is rather long.

We are trying to avoid another long visit to ED and potential admission.  We have been told we need a therapeutic relationship with the team due to this being a condition that is ongoing and will have admissions attached, this is difficult with such a lack of communication.  I have lodged a complaint to the liaison officer via their complaints email.  What is the use of the priority system?
