"Pericardial effusion Albany ED"

About: Albany Health Campus / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

I brought my husband in to ED at Albany Hospital with shortness of breath and abdominal and right chest pain. He had open heart surgery 7 weeks ago. A cardiologist and his surgeon had assessed him two days prior and said the pain was normal. A GP had assessed him 20 minutes before and said to go in over the next 48 hours if it got worse but did not seem concerned. We went straight into ED after the GP appointment. Something wasn’t right.

The ED doctor was great and thorough (we cannot remember her name but she was wonderful) and discovered he had pericardial effusion. He was sent by RFDS to Fiona Stanley. He cannot say enough about what an excellent job the St John Ambulance paramedics did. He has had 1 litre drained and is doing well. Very glad we decided to go to ED.

Dear guidejw67

Thank you for sharing your husband’s story. It goes to show how important the patient voice, and that of their loved ones, is in navigating our health journey. We know that families and carers often identify when “things are not right” more quickly than health care staff. It is reassuring to hear that your husband was rapidly assessed in Albany and transferred to an appropriate Perth hospital.

We have shared your story with the ED team as well as the Hospital’s leadership team.

We wish your husband all the best in his recovery.
