"Bleeding for 45min"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Surgical Ward

(as the patient),

Recently I was admitted for drainage of a massive sebaceous cyst under my right arm was told I could go home next day when they went to have a look I had to tell the doctor to put gloves on I also had to ask them to please go gentle as it was very sore and I was not the best with pain. I had 2 ask the doctor several times to stop and push their hands away.

When it came to redressing the nurse came in started taking of the dressing and told me they were going to remove the gauze that was stuffed inside the wound this nurse was extremely ruff and was not gentle they yanked it out so hard and quick causing it to reopen. By that time I'm screaming to stop, the nurse kept going they told me to take a oxy and they would come back in 10 mins to finish off mind you the bed was raised so high I couldn't get of I was stuck on my side.

This is when I felt my own blood pouring out from my armpit I looked down and there was alot of blood my shirt was soaked there was a form of circle starting around my body I started to panic I screamed for help because my buzzer was removed from my bed I was left blooding out for 45 min I put pressure on the wound until someone came in.

The doctor came in they barely cleaned me up redressed the wound I was given a different shirt for only seconds I was bleeding out again this was very frightening and scared me that they were not there for me. I was told to strip off and lay on my side again they removed the bloody dressing and held my arm back while the doctor cauterised the blood it was terrible I could smell my own flesh burning and was not given any local. Why this took place I am disgusted in the way I was cared for at Kalgoorlie Hospital. I took photos of how I was left and sent them through to my family because I was that scared.

Dear apusym69,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience and raising your concerns with us. I sincerely apologise for what sounds to have been a very distressing and painful experience for you.

As Care Opinion is an anonymous feedback platform, I am unable to investigate the specific details of your care. However, I would like to learn more about what happened and undertake a complete a review of your care. If you feel comfortable to do so, I encourage you to contact the Kalgoorlie Hospital to provide your consent and contact information. You can do this by calling 9080 5817 or sending an email to GSEGCG@health.wa.gov.au.

I would also like to take this opportunity to let you know about an escalation process we have in place at the Kalgoorlie Health Campus that supports patients and their families and carers to call for assistance if they feel that their or their loved one’s healthcare concerns are not being addressed appropriately. This process is called Aishwarya’s CARE Call and it enables you to speak to a senior member of staff who will listen to your concerns and help you or your loved one. The Goldfields phone number is 1800 976 123.

I genuinely appreciate the time you have taken to share your experience as this supports us to identify and implement strategies to improve the care we provide.

I hope that you have now made a full recovery.

Kind regards
