"Knee Surgery"

About: Goulburn Valley Health

(as the patient),

I'm a pensioner with no savings or assets. i have a torn meniscus. I do what they tell us to do, remain active and exercise. So i play recreational tennis.

I was put on the waiting list for Gv health Shepparton but the govt changed what scans are covered by Medicare so in order to hopefully be category 2 i paid $330 for my own MRI. Alas even with the injury image in front of them i was still cat 3. Daily pain, trouble sleeping. For 15 months all i did was check the letterbox waiting for my number to come up then finally after making a call and pleading nearly in tears they sent me a letter.

Now i was scheduled for surgery. Finally finally i can take my life off hold i thought.

Not so fast. The morning of the surgery i got a call saying it was cancelled next available is 6 weeks later.

6 weeks later i got a call the day before saying it's cancelled. next available 6 weeks from now.

I couldn't believe the admissions lady asked me if i wanted to just drop off the list and get on with my life. Like What? My knee is preventing me getting on with my life.

It rubs salt in the wound when you read about Novak Djokovich who had the exact same injury and was back playing tennis in less than 5 weeks and i have 2 years now since the injury happened of daily pain and 2 cancellations so far. And a friend told me she had 8 cancellations for an elective procedure once.

Medicare the almighty model health care system of the world. I used to sing its praises but not any more. In my opinion we may be better than some countries but plenty are much better too.
