"Alcohol addiction and Wellington House"

About: Wellington House

(as the patient),

I have been an alcoholic for probably the last 20 years, although more severely over the last 10. Prior to my first visit to Wellington House in 2019, I'd been to countless other hospital and inpatient detoxes as well as several residential rehabilitation centres - to no avail.

I went back to Wellington House Christmas 2022 and exited in early 2023. Unfortunately I hadn't quite dropped my ego or fully grasped the gravity of my situation (and I don't mean just the obvious health concerns - at that point I'd come to realise I was in a cycle of abusive relationships, lost jobs, unstable living arrangements, poor finances and mounting debt, shitty self care, no friends etc.

I had two more attempts at Wellington and unfortunately for me, and the poor nurses on shift at the time, the first reattempt I seemed to have contracted head lice (not from within Wellington itself! I brought them with me) and so I was given the option to stay in my room with a DVD player or I could discharge and come back. I lasted 3 days but couldn't handle the isolation so I left. This was in no way any fault of turning point / Wellington House.

The next time I went back I got appendicitis! Finally on my last visit everything went right - I stayed 31 days and have been 125 days sober since! The level of care, understanding, patience and support is amazing - and not just for my obvious addiction but also in addressing my other issues (PTSD, being unemployed etc). I believe the staff genuinely do care and I cannot thank them enough for the new lease I now have on life.
