I had contacted the Northern Sydney Oral Health Service in the afternoon as I had to postpone a follow up appointment due to cancer diagnosis and treatment. I received a call at 8.15am the next day and they informed me that a mid morning appointment at St Leonards had cancelled and I had to be there on time!
I attended arriving half an hour before the appointment time and the receptionist took my details and then found issue with my listed address. They then proceeded discussing with a ‘supervisor’ and I heard them asking why do I have to deal with this headache …
They then came out into the public area and started discussing my personal details in full view and hearing of the others in the waiting room. When it progressed into my medical condition, I raised concerns of it being in public area. I was then ushered into a wait room behind the secure doorway. A supervising doctor whom I recognised from previous attendances (pre-cancer) as my treating dentist. I felt they looked me up and down ( I have as part of chemo reactions, lost all hair, eyebrows, eyelash … and wear a soft headwear). I recall they refused to treat me or even look at the reason I was there despite my explanations.
I told them I would like to raise an urgent complaint and was told noone was available but someone would be in touch. I have heard no further .
I feel there was an elitist and discriminatory attitude by the decision made and the way I look including as a result of my cancer treatment contributed to denial of service by this NSW Health Service. In my opinion, there is also reverse discrimination against anyone who is well-spoken and dresses with care. I watched other older people who I believe had interpreters being waved through with seemingly barely any checks.
I would like NSW Health to change its emergency dental processes and regimens and allow for treatment in any service in Sydney to dissipate what I believe to be elitism by treating practitioners!
