I underwent surgery at Fiona Stanley Hospital Perth W.A. recently. I had a lower right lobectomy done.
On the 22nd day after surgery, a doctor came in and informed me they were removing my drainage tubes, and was taking me off a drip and oxygen, they then said I would be going home once the drainage tube was removed.
The drainage tubes were removed, and a nurse then helped me into the shower it was while I was taking the shower I felt weak and found it very difficult to breathe.
An X-Ray of my chest was taken in my room, it was after the X-Ray that the same doctor came in and informed me they had to do a procedure in my room as there were no operating theatres available to put a drainage tube back into my chest.
The doctor and another person began preparing for the procedure the doctor gloved up and then proceeded over to the bin and picked it up and moved it closer to where the surgical equipment was on a tray to the left of me.
The doctor informed the person with them that they would explain the procedure as they were performing it, once the doctor started making an incision I went to explain I didn’t want to hear what was taking place, before I could finish telling them I didn’t want to hear it I recall the doctor said to me, excuse me I am talking to (the other person) it was shortly after this I could feel myself starting to shake and my body becoming stiff.
After the procedure the doctor came back into my room and said that they are very sorry I had to go through that trauma but a nurse got the wrong patient. But I knew that wasn't true. That doctor was the one who personally came through and said they are going to remove the drainage today, that I was coming off oxygen and my drips were going to be removed. That made it so much worse. I believe the doctor passed it on and blamed it on the nurse.
I received Diasapan medications after the procedure.
I have since been to my local GP and have told them that I am traumatised from this and they have put me on a health care plan to see a Psychologist.
On the 23rd day, the doctor informed me that the drainage tubes would again be removed and I could be discharged, I replied I refuse to leave the hospital for at least 11 hours after the drainage tube be removed as my relative was going to be driving back to my home town 2 hours away, and if this happened again I did not want my relative to be subjected to being responsible for my death.
