"Paediatrician Service"

About: Broome Health Campus / Paediatrics

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

1. I feel like the diagnostic assessment process wasn't explained to me clearly by my child's doctor.

2. The Paediatrician letters don't clearly capture all that is happening for my child (it just says ADHD and doesn't explore any of my other concerns). I am worried that my child won't be able to access the support they need or live independently as an adult.

Dear Remotecommunity,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concerns. Please accept our apologies for the frustration you have experienced with your recent visit to the paediatric service.

We take patient feedback seriously, and we deeply regret that you did not feel that adequate information about the diagnostic assessment process was provided by our specialist at your visit. Our commitment is to provide compassionate care and clear communication to all of our patients. We will be addressing this with the team to ensure that our specialists provide thorough explanations and opportunities for parents to ask questions at the time of the consultation.

Furthermore, we recognise the unique challenges of caring for a child with a potential disability and the impact of lifelong care needs on their parents or carers. Your concerns about how your child will integrate into an adult world and be able to live independently are real and we appreciate that you need to trust our paediatric team to navigate these concerns with you.

I would invite you to speak to your referring doctor about arranging a telehealth follow up appointment to further discuss these concerns with the specialist. A useful strategy is to provide a written list of questions/concerns to your referring GP, who can add this to the referral letter. This can help the specialist to prepare and focus the consultation.

Alternatively, please feel free to contact me directly so that I can facilitate this for you.

Thank you once again for taking the time to reach out. We hope to be able to resolve this for you.

Kind regards

Sue
