"Unnecessary surgery"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Medical Imaging

(as the patient),

I am elderly and a week or so ago I had an infection in my thumb from a wooden splinter and the staff member that did the ultrasound said that there was a foreign body in there that was 3mm x 4mm – around the size of a match head. I thought that it was impossible because a splinter would only be a fraction of that. But the staff member said that they had to get this foreign body out of my thumb so I had to go to theatre. There’s around 18-20 people involved over the course of this doing different things and the surgeon found nothing in my thumb, I also had to remove some skin before they dug in to find the foreign body all because it seemed the person who did the ultrasound didn’t know what they were doing.
