My family member had a short stay in ED this month, before being transferred to ward G72 until their discharge.
Being in hospital is not generally a pleasant experience as a patient or family member, you really would rather be almost anywhere else doing almost anything else, something I was reminded as a worker in the healthcare system.
I want to first thank the ED nurses who cared for my family member and the lovely ED doctor who contacted me telling me of my family member's confusion and diagnosis and gathering information. Despite a clearly very busy first night in the ED, my family member was treated with nothing but patience and kindness after having soiled themself. Once they were settled, I was provided a chair to sit with them. The doctor came to speak with us, answered all my questions and also updated me about test results and the plan. The care and communication were top notch, which I know is not always easy in an ED.
I also want to thank the nurses and OT on ward G72. The care my family member received was nothing short of exceptional. Every nursing interaction was polite, helpful and professional, often with their genuine care being evident as well. The OT was understanding and patient with lots of my questions and extremely helpful, organizing supports post discharge.
Even my brief interaction with the lovely pharmacist for Ward G72, who introduced herself with a smile and explained the medications for discharge and advised how long they would take, was exceptional.
Every time I called for an update, I was treated with care by switchboard and nursing alike, I was provided updates and it didn’t ever feel that it was an interruption, although I’m sure it was.
The cleaners were kind and upbeat, the lady providing the refreshments was friendly and warm, and the worker who came to take the ward meal orders was kind and understanding of my relative's confusion.
Despite hospital workers dealing with so much and being stretched so very thin, I could not have been more impressed with the care received and SCGH staff being so consistently positive throughout this admission. I believe every single one of you deserve recognition for this.
