"Placement of cannula"

About: Busselton Health Campus / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

Specialist was looking for an area to place cannula. Eventually placed cannula on my right wrist. Gastroscopy was mid afternoon and had fasted from midnight. When anaesthetist had placed solution in the cannula I had a stinging sensation go right up my right arm. 3 minutes later the staff asked if I was sleepy. I was not. Sleepy yet. No. The anaesthetist looked at my right wrist and realised this cannula was not suitable and the 3 staff around me commenced looking for another area to place a cannula. The specialist walked in to start the procedure and realise there was a problem.  They commenced looking for an area to which they placed the cannula in left arm.

After discharge I removed 6 pressure patches that had been placed on all the areas for attempted cannula placement. My palm and wrist where the first cannula had been placed had turned blue. This area was turning red around the bruising and becoming very sore. Upon arriving home I took Panadol 4 hourly hoping this would help. The Busselton Aftercare nurse phoned regarding check up after procedure to which I explained about the bruising, redness and stiffness. The wrist became stiff overnight and extremely painful. As I live in Bunbury and they couldn’t see me, the nurse advised I visit the BH ED. I made a doctors appointment for that day. The doctor advised that the area was extremely infected and placed me on antibiotics.
