"Outpatients visit"

About: Narrogin Health Service / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

I took my spouse to the outpatient clinic in Narrogin hospital recently with extreme pain and swelling in their wrist.

We waited maybe 40 minutes before being into the corridor of the A&E.

Here we waited to be seen by a nurse followed by a Dr.  A xray was arranged and nothing showed on the xray other than arthritis.  After a couple of hours they gave my spouse tramadol even though my spouse was told they did not work on their pain levels.

We were left alone again. After 5 hours my spouse was given a 1mg morphine tablet, while wearing a 15 mg patch.

I believe, because my spouse said the tablet slightly eased the pain, they were sent home with no other investigation.

No bloods were taken. Our local Dr surgery was closed for a week.

My spouse's pain was extreme and ongoing to the point they were suicidal but this was ignored.

We were far from happy with their treatment or should I say non treatment

Dear castoryx74

I was sorry to hear of your spouse’s recent experience with the Narrogin Hospital Emergency Department (ED). Waiting times in the ED can depend on the busyness of the department at the time and I apologise if the delay and care we provided did not adequately address your spouse’s pain.

I would like to take the opportunity to advise you we have a telephone located in the ED waiting room. Aishwarya’s Care Call (1800 994 063) is a process for patients and their families and carers to request assistance when they are concerned about the healthcare they are receiving. When a CARE Call is made a senior staff member will listen to your concerns and take what action is required to address your concerns. The senior staff will liaise with the treating medical team and keep you informed of the outcome. If you would like further information about Aishwarya’s CARE Call, please visit the WACHs Website at: WA Country Health Service- Aishwarya's CARE Call.

Your feedback is very important to help us improve our health services. I would encourage you to contact me on (08) 9881 0413 so I have the opportunity to further investigate what happened on that day.

Kind regards,

Jenny Menasse
