"Terrible care"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

Newborn has a brain condition, and has constant apneas. They've been Juggled around wards. Moved to a Neuro and Cardiac ward for our 3rd admission in my little ones short month they've been alive. Baby stopped breathing overnight 7 times and needed CPR at home. After 5hrs of being admitted (after spending hrs in emergency, and them being in a bad condition) I went for a shower and came out and all their monitors were turned off.

I’m in here with them to be monitored as they have seizures and stops breathing at night and has oxygen desaturations to 50%. I urgently said to staff outside why are the monitors off and they said they turn the monitors off over night. Which I believe is a lie, and very unsafe! I was discharged from this ward only 6 days prior and they don’t turn the monitors off over night. They also turned my baby’s monitors off three days before they were discharged as I was concerned about their tachycardia as their heart rate was resting between 160-200bpm.

Dear Unkbb47

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion regarding your experience at Perth Children’s Hospital in what would be a very stressful and anxious time.

It is unusual for changes in care and monitoring to occur without discussion with the family and I would like to investigate this matter further. If you are open to this, I encourage you to contact the Child and Family Liaison Service by phone on 6456 0032 or by email at CAHSFeedback@health.wa.gov.au to provide your child’s details. We can then provide you with specific information on your case and elaborate on the concerns you have raised.

We hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Linda
