"A hostile situation where the security team handled themselves and the situation impeccably!"

About: Sydney / Sydney Eye Hospital / Security

(as a service user),

I was sitting on a park bench outside the emergency department in the grounds of Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital  when a person standing outside the emergency department lit up a cigarette in what is clearly signed a no smoking area. They were approached by the hospital security manager who politely informed them that it was a no smoking area and the security manager again very politely directed the person to an area where he could smoke which was on Macquarie Street or down on Hospital Road.

The person was uncooperative immediately and refused to go to either designated smoking area preferring to stay where they were and continue to smoke and argue with the security manager. At this point the two security guards on duty approached the person and also politely asked them to not smoke there and again reiterated where the appropriate designated smoking areas were.

The person then began to be abusive to all security personnel and used many racial slurs towards them, swearing and threatening the security guards with physical harm, the situation escalated quickly and the person was escorted from the hospital grounds in a non harmful manner. Once on Macquarie Street the person continued to abuse the security guards with more racial slurs and threats of harming them. Moments later the person returned to the emergency department and once again began arguing with the security team and again using many racial slurs and foul language, they were however taken into the emergency department to be triaged by a nurse.

After only a few minutes the person returned to the waiting room and had a verbal  altercation with a patient who told them that their behaviour was disgusting, they were abusive to this patient and was told to wait outside where they immediately had yet another verbal altercation with an elderly patient who was also disgusted with their behaviour and abuse aimed towards the security guards.

The aggressive person was then taken into the emergency department again and I didn’t see them after that. It is my opinion that the security manager and his two guards on duty handled themselves in a manner that the hospital should be immensely proud of, they endured the vilest of racial slurs and hostility from this person and they kept their cool throughout, as a one time hospital security guard I can’t speak highly enough of their conduct throughout this most unsavoury situation! They did Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital proud!
