I was scheduled to have cataract surgery on both eyes one month apart the same anaesthetist was used each time but different eye surgeons. The first procedure exceeded my expectation insomuch as it was nowhere close as stressful or painful as I had built it up to be and when the time came for the second procedure I was fully confident I would repeat the previous experience.
The first difference was that I was to fast from midnight the previous day with water only till 10am I was scheduled to arrive at 11 am, I couldn’t understand why that was as I am awake during the procedure. I went through the usual eye numbing process and proceeded to the surgery without the sedation I received the first time. I am not prepared to document here what happened during the procedure but I will say that if that had been the first of my two cataract surgeries I would not have returned for the next one. I returned to day ward around 6 pm and had my first food in almost 24 hours.
I have no complaints re the hospital and the staff were all wonderful. I am also grateful to have been able to have this surgery performed however as the 2nd one was so traumatising I would just like to know why was it so different to the first time.
