My husband and I attended a combination of online and in person hypnobirthing classes provided for free by WA Health Services. Amy from Kalgoorlie was great and had a wealth of knowledge. These classes have helped me feel so much more prepared for our upcoming birth.
I do have one complaint. There is a large emphasis on the use of baths during labor as a pain relief and relaxation tool. However, Kalgoorlie maternal wards do not offer any baths in their wards. When I met with a staff member on a different occasion I was told that they recently found an old one in storage but they don't know how good it is because they haven't used it yet.
I find it very surprising and disappointing that in a town that is a main hub with a population of approx. 30,000 people plus people who come from other towns to use the hospital, they would not have something a basic as a bath available for use in the maternity wards. If water is an effective pain management tool (as suggested in our hypnobirthing classes) wouldn't having this available for women giving birth reduce the likelihood of other interventions, thus mitigating any additional costs for the baths? I don't think that it is very acceptable that women in the Goldfields don't have the same access to birthing facilities that they have elsewhere (we are not a small town!) and there seems to be no logical reason for it.
"Great hypnobirthing classes but no bath in the maternity ward?"
