About: Derby Hospital / Emergency Department Derby Hospital / General Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

My child (a tween) was admitted into Derby Hospital the ED nurses were amazing and made us feel comfortable once transferred to the ward the nurses we saw were very rude and made us feel uncomfortable.

The night nurse was very rough with my child and I felt spoke very rudely to them and when I did say something the night nurse seemed taken back and tried to say I was the one being rude. The next morning the day nurse came on and was even more rude and very snappy in my opinion. I had to stay with my child also had my toddler with me as I had no one to look after them. I felt the nurse was quite rude when the doctor asked them to get another bed for my child. They said yeh when I'm ready, the doctor then went on and said well maybe my toddler would like to have an afternoon nap the nurse then said oh well..

Also the nurse gave my tween child an apple juice which they ended up sharing with their sibling and I overheard the nurse complaining about the little one drinking it! I then asked the nurse if I could go home to get some clothes for all of us which I felt shouted at me down the hall of the ward 'No!'. This nurse made me feel very low so I said something to them and was going to discharge my child, they came running saying my child was very sick and they have to stay.

I said yeh well we don't want to be here we are here because we have to and I also said all I want to is go home to get some change of clothes for all of us and to get some food for my toddler cause the hospital food was disgusting.. wasn't like I was asking to go to the local pub to have a beer! I told them I don't do drugs don't drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes and they made me feel like I was just dumping my child in hospital and it wasn't like I lived 3 hours away I live like 30 seconds away from the hospital.

I also told them that the nurses in ED were more friendly and caring then the ward nurses! In the end I went home got clothes food and drinks and was back at the hospital in half n hour! Overall the nurses I saw in the ward at Derby Hospital aren't very nice, not all but most of them!

Dear Akjwemfm

I am sorry to hear that during your recent experience at Derby Hospital we did not meet your expectations. I will ensure that it is reinforced to all our staff that our expectation is that all interactions with patients, and their family should be polite and respectful.

Thank you for your feedback with regard to the food options and we would be interested in finding out some more details around your concerns if you are willing to share. Eg. what was it you didn’t like (portions, taste, options, etc).

Should you wish to discuss further or provide additional information regarding ways we can potentially improve our food service please do not hesitate to contact myself or Louise Scott (A/Director of Nursing) on 9193 3335.

Kind Regards

Chris Hart

A/West Kimberley Operations Manager
