"My experience at Geraldton Regional Hospital"

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a relative),

My sister who is in palliative care with a particularly nasty tumour protruding from her backside, and also suffering from pneumonia, woke up very breathless and clammy recently, the doctor on call sent her by ambulance to the Geraldton Regional Hospital.

She was very scared so asked if I could go with her and stay with her.

I rode in the back of Ambulance with her( the staff were wonderful), and stayed with her in ED.

We were treated very well, considering it was a long weekend and in emergency.

But when the evening nurse came on, our experience was wonderful!

The young nurse Katie, was amazing! Nothing was too much for her to assist us.

She recognised that my sister was panicking and confused and allowed me to not only stay with my sister, but to also go with her when she had X-rays and ct scan.

When told she had to stay in overnight my sister was very upset and asked if I could stay overnight with her.

This lovely young lady, not only got permission for me to stay overnight with my sister, but also miraculously procured a bed for me so I could stay in same room as my sister!

We hadn’t shared a room together for 48 years!

Katie turned, what could’ve been a very trying time into an almost pleasant ( after all we were in ED), experience!

So very grateful to the empathy and care this young nurse showed. The rest of the staff were also very supportive, but Katie was exceptional!

Dear SisterDear

Thank you for sharing your story on Care Opinion.

It is clear from your story that your sister was in a difficult and distressing condition when the ambulance brought her in. She was lucky to have such a caring sister to accompany and support her.

The team at Geraldton ED work tirelessly to provide high quality care that our community can be proud of, it is always a pleasure to read when we have achieved that. You have described Katie’s warm and caring nature perfectly, we are all very proud of the efforts she made to provide your sister and yourself with a safe and calming environment. I enjoyed reading of you both reliving your childhood days sharing a room together, it made me smile. I shall ensure that Katie is appropriately acknowledged for her sterling efforts.

I have forwarded your story to St Johns Ambulance so they can share with your Geraldton team.

I hope your sister is feeling better and thank you again for your lovely words.

Kind regards

Leanne Sice
