"Becoming seriously ill whilst on holidays"

About: Kalgoorlie Health Campus / Kalgoorlie Outpatient Clinic

(as the patient),

My home is in SA, but I became suddenly very sick whilst on holidays in WA.  After a stint in both Esperance and Fiona Stanley hospitals I found myself admitted to Kalgoorlie hospital at Easter time with renal failure. I was well looked after for the five days I was in the hospital before being sent via RFDS back to Fiona Stanley hospital for more treatment.

I eventually made it back to Kalgoorlie, but in early May had to go back to Perth for two months for an operation and recovery.

I now find myself a (temporary) resident of Kalgoorlie (for as long as it takes) whilst I undergo chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.

My first contact with the cancer centre was by phone in June with their coordinating nurse, Lorinda, who straight away made me feel cared about.

On my first day I had no idea what I was facing and was full of trepidation when I fronted up to reception at the cancer centre and was met by the friendly receptionist. I then set foot into the chemo unit and was immediately put at ease by the lovely nurses and was made to feel comfortable about the whole process.

I have now been having chemo (on and off because of other complications) since July and have a way to go yet but I cannot speak highly enough about the care and dedication from all the staff in the cancer centre and chemo unit of the Kalgoorlie Health Campus. Thank you all.

Dear charawp49,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out and tell us about your experience with our services. It must be hard enough to become so seriously unwell. For this to happen when you are away from your home, must be so much worse.

I am so pleased to hear how our caring, highly skilled staff have supported and cared for you along your journey. I agree they are something special.

I will be sure to pass on your kind words and gratitude. Knowing that they have members of the community that appreciate their work does go a long way in boosting their morale. This is especially important in areas such as Cancer Services and Chemotherapy.

I hope you are feeling well today and please know if there is ever any way we can support you further, you can reach out through your treating team or by emailing GSEGCG@health.wa.gov.au.

Kind regards Alicia
