"Staff practicing out of their scope"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Unfortunately I had a visit in Fiona Stanley emergency department over the weekend, medical and nursing staff were excellent however I believe volunteers at the emergency department were practicing out of their scope. During the triage process, volunteers were deciding which patients should go next, despite to my knowledge having no medical training, I find this to be very dangerous and inappropriate.

Dear capricornusmz49,

Thank you for the encouraging feedback regarding the nurses and doctors during your recent visit to the Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department (ED).

The volunteer service based at the front door of the ED are there to greet and welcome you to our Emergency Department, to assist with way finding and to offer direction for enquiries, as well as escalating all clinical concerns to directly to the triage nursing staff.

They help the ED team in managing the queues and assist in determining order of arrival to enable a fair triage system. The volunteers trained to take on this role, are aware of their scope and do not offer clinical advice, only to inform nursing staff of concerns as expressed by patients upon entering the department.

Separately we also have allocated ED Waiting Room nursing staff who conduct ongoing reviews of patients waiting to be seen to ensure any deterioration is identified and prioritised accordingly.

I hope this allays your concerns that they may be taking on a clinical role that they are not trained for.

Kind regards,

Neil Doverty
