"Life saving care"

About: Bunbury Hospital Margaret River Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

I recently attended the Margaret River emergency hospital for treatment of symptoms of left arm numbness which turned out to be a heart condition known as rapid AF.  The team Dr S and Dr M, Nurses - Leanne, Jode, Nic and Caitie were outstanding (sorry if I missed anyone) .  I finally ended up in the coronary care unit in Bunbury, the life saving care these professionals gave me - actually saved my life!!

The only downside was the demand on the ambulances as there was some moto cross event in Bunbury which extended the time to retrieve me to get to that CCU. There was another patient in the ED who had been waiting 16 hours ( I overheard staff saying) to get to Bunbury and they had heart trouble as well !!!

The St Johns staff were amazing I think they said  this was their 3rd trip!  I am not sure if this is true but surely if there is a bike event like this, the event organisers should have a plan that does not impact  our communities?

Lastly - I can't believe that the Margaret River hospital staff have to work in such cramped conditions! there were patients in the ambulance bay, foyer and recovery which I ended up in and the nurses/Doctors were run off their feet trying to ensure these patients were all cared for .

Hopefully this will happen soon, maybe next election?

I cannot commend the staff enough at Margaret River they are "simply the best"...

Dear Jigster62,

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience at the Margaret River Hospital Emergency Department.

Being in the emergency room can be a frightening experience, particularly when there is a potential life-threatening condition occurring, so we do try and make sure that we never lose sight of the “human” factor.

It is wonderful to hear that the team members at the hospital worked so well together to provide timely and compassionate care. They work very hard to deliver this level of care and are always appreciative of positive feedback. We are glad that you felt that we treated you with professionalism and kindness.

St John’s is a contracted to WACHS to provide our transport services between hospitals as well as providing that vital emergency service to our community. I am glad to hear that they eventually got you to your destination safely, especially with the added demand from the MotoX event. I will happily pass on your thanks to the St Johns staff.

We fully acknowledge the state of the infrastructure is not what we would all like it to be, especially in a town that is continuously growing in size and placing more strain on the current conditions.

We will continue to work with the Department of Health to plan improvements to the Emergency Department including the waiting spaces for patients and families and hope to have a favourable outcome.

Margaret River Hospital plays a vital role within our health service and to our community and we acknowledge and advocate to progress any enhancements to the site.

We will definitely pass on your kind words to the team - Dr S and Dr M, Nurses - Leanne, Jode, Nic and Caitie.

Please let us know if there is anything else we can do for you and we wish you well on your road to recovery.

Warm Regards,

Sandy Znidarsich
