"The way I have been treated while trying to see my partner in hospital"

About: Bentley Hospital / Mental Health

(as a carer),

My partner suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and I took them to mental health they denied them help so I refused to leave until they helped my partner they instead called police on me and took my partner into involuntary care. They were at Armadale hospital, I was not told anything that was going on, they left them in emergency for 2 days then transferred them to Bentley hospital at midnight, I was not told of the transfer either.

I was told by Armadale hospital that I was not allowed to come and see my parner. When I spoke to Bentley hospital they told me I was allowed to see my partner but so far I have been to the hospital twice and been turned away both times even though on one of the times my partner was on the phone to me wanting to see me and the nurses still would not allow me to see them.

The visiting hours are 10 am to 7 pm but the website says special arrangements can be made outside of those hours however I feel the staff have no compassion whatsoever and do not even attempt to help me, I believe I am treated as if I am a criminal. I made my partner a coffee from home and brought them some clothes and some food however when I spoke to them five minutes after the nurse came out to get the things I brought for them, my partner told me they had taken the coffee off them. When I read the information on the website for the hospital it says that it is encouraged to bring patients the things they like from home because it makes them more comfortable so why would they take what I had brought them away?

My partner and I run our own business - we are residential and commercial tradespeople contracting to builders, if we don’t complete work we don’t get paid and while my partner is sick I am completing the work on my own which is a difficult task and because they will not be compassionate and allow me in a little early to see them. I will more than likely miss the deadline for the completion of the current job my partner and I are working on which will mean that I will not make the current pay run in time for our rent to be due causing undue stress on me as I need to keep a roof over our heads while my partner is sick.

I understand the doctors are refusing to give my partner their depot injection which they have been receiving for quite some time now. They just didn’t get it for a while because my partner thought they didn’t need it and now they are refusing to give it to them. Instead, I understand they are just keeping them sedated on involuntary care. I have looked after my partner everyday for the last five years and no one at all is consulting me even though I have expressed my wishes that this occur. I believe I’m being completely ignored and it seems the staff who are rude and uncaring are going out of their way to make sure the complete opposite of anything I ask I what they do.

I’ve never in my life come across anything I believe to be so completely wrong and inhumane as this. I have contacted the mental health advocacy centre and will be contacting the hospital complaints department and the health minister because I feel this behaviour is absolutely disgusting

Dear Bugsy malone

I was disappointed to read your story about your experience with our Mental Health Service. I apologise for the distress the interaction with our staff caused you. This is not the service we strive to provide.

I do acknowledge that it must be difficult when a family member is in hospital and having to work and commute can be quite stressful. Loved ones are able to visit outside of the visiting hours, a discussion with clinical staff or the Nurse Unit Manager will be able to support this. You can always contact the ward and speak to staff so arrangements can be made on (08) 9224 2244.

I am sorry that his coffee was not passed on to him. The hospital has strict guidelines for bringing food and drinks to patients for health and safety reasons. I have been informed that you have already been contacted by the Patient Experience Team and all of your concerns are currently being investigated.

I trust that we will be able to provide some answers and also ensure that your concerns are adequately addressed.

I sincerely wish you and your partner all the best.

Kind regards

Dori Lombardi
