"Mismanaged maternity care"

About: Narrogin Health Service / Obstetric Services

(as the patient),

Late last year, I presented to Narrogin maternity ward with reduced fetal movements. This was not my usual hospital as I was visiting family in the area. I was assessed by a locum midwife who was very helpful and skilled.

The CTG was abnormal and concerning, after being in hospital with monitoring for the morning I was discharged home by the consultant obstetrician and told to present to my local hospital for continued monitoring the next day. I was not given any indication of my baby or I being in danger or that there was something wrong with my baby. When in fact my baby’s CTG was abnormal and very concerning and I believe I was not communicated this appropriately. As a result I entered preterm labour that night and my baby was growth restricted and unwell. I don’t believe I was treated appropriately, that I should have been discharged or that I was fully informed of what was happening with me or my baby.

I am lucky that I was able to make it back home before I went into preterm labour and my usual care team was able to care for me but I believe being discharged was the wrong decision.

Dear redgm84,

Thank you very much for sharing with us your experience of visiting Narrogin Hospital last year. I can only imagine how frightening this experience must have been for you. I do hope that you and your baby are doing well now.

I am very sorry that the communication with the clinical team at Narrogin Hospital fell short of what we aim to provide. Your description of what happened does not reflect the high-quality care we strive for. As a mother, I understand how important it is to feel heard, respected and supported, especially when it comes to the health of your child.

We want you to know that we have taken your concerns very seriously and would greatly appreciate the opportunity to review your experience in more detail. This would help us to not only understand what care was provided, but also to identify ways we can prevent this happening to someone else. If you are happy to speak with me, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. My name is Kristie Nottle and I am the Operations Manager at Narrogin Hospital. Please feel welcome to call me on 9881 0413.

Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable feedback as this gives us the opportunity to learn and improve.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely

Kristie Nottle
