Recently my relative went in for day surgery of a pilonidal sinus x3. Day after discharge their wound was oozing large amounts of fluid and they went to the emergency department, where they were told they should have been given antibiotics after surgery and that they probably needed antibiotics. The staff contacted the surgical team and the wound was redressed and my relative was given more dressing to change if it kept leaking. No other advise and left with no script for antibiotics.
A few days later my relative returns to the emergency department because the wound is painful, still oozing large amounts of fluid and looking infected. The staff, swabbed the wound, redressed it and sent them home at 2am with no antibiotics but a script for some and advice to return later in the morning to see the surgeons if concerned.
My relative the next morning in pain to be told its infected, the sutures removed, wound packed with no pain relief until 3/4 completed before it was thought of. They were given scripts and told the wound would need to be changed every day and sent on their way. I received a phone call with my relative crying in pain a hole in their bum and not knowing what to do. No advice about pain relief given as to when it could next be taken or how often to take, no information on when, who or where the wound dressing were to be done.
I made them go back in and get the information they needed. I believe the emergency department should have ensured this for my relative's own safety and to reduce risk of overdose, to make sure they were pain free or comfortable and that what was given was effective before they left.
The episodes of what I feel are negligence from after surgery to now has been terrible and now my relative has months and months ahead of them to heal, which I understand effects young people both mentally, emotionally and physically. I believe the doctors and staff should be ashamed as it seems most of this should have been prevented.
"Poor service through out the hospital"
