"No feedback or sense of urgency from Paediatric and Outpatient departments."

About: Hedland Health Campus / Outpatients

(as a parent/guardian),

We waited 3 months for my child’s Paediatric appointment, which is not too bad to be honest. The appointment went very well, the paediatrician was amazing, thorough and made my child feel very comfortable.

Assessments were sent to be done and we were told my child would be “charted” in a month. I made contact with Outpatients after 6 weeks of not hearing anything and was informed that my child's booked to be charted in a weeks time, 7 weeks after the appointment that we were told in that it would be a month. My child would then need to wait for an appointment.

I feel that as much as this is not urgent or life threatening in the grand scheme of things, as a parent need to be diligent as this is affecting my child's mental health and we need information to have them treated whether that be with the Paediatricians or elsewhere. Having access to these services, or lack of, really makes the HHC a very negative environment and place to deal with. I am aware of the challenges the staff face at HHC but a bit of care a compassion can go a long way, especially in the outpatient department. I have now made and had to cancel multiple appointments outside of the hospital that I can not attend with my child as we are waiting on a response and result, and the longer we wait I feel it puts my child more at risk.

Dear FrustratedwithPATs

Thank you for sharing your story about your experience with the Hedland Health Campus Outpatient Department. I was disappointed to read of the delay, lack of communication and follow up of your child’s next appointment for review and discussion of their assessment results.

So I can get a better understanding of what has occurred I would like the opportunity to have a conversation with you. Sharing your story may result in a thorough review with our Outpatient Department team, and if you were willing, involve you in discussions relating to any outcomes or recommendations as a result. Please feel free to contact me on 08 9174 1040 or email at Kathleen.Robertson@health.wa.gov.au

Again, thank you for sharing your story and I hope to hear from you in the near future.

Kind regards,

Kath Robertson
